Hosts Germany Qualify for Euro 2024 Last 16 with 2-0 Win over Hungary

Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan got their names on the scoresheet as hosts Germany became the first team to qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Wednesday after beating Hungary 2-0 in Munich.

Musiala, the 19-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder, gave Germany the lead in the 11th minute with a fine individual effort, driving into the Hungary area and firing a low shot past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Gundogan doubled Germany's advantage in the 52nd minute, tapping home from close range after Hungary failed to clear a corner.

The victory means Germany have qualified for the knockout stages with a game to spare, while Hungary's hopes of reaching the last 16 are all but over.

Hungary, who have not won in their last eight EURO matches, had a number of chances to get back into the game but they were unable to take them.

Roland Sallai had a goal ruled out in first-half stoppage time for offside, while Adam Szalai wasted a great chance to equalise in the second half when he headed wide from close range.

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also made a number of important saves to keep Hungary at bay, including a stunning stop from Dominik Szoboszlai in the first half.

Germany manager Hansi Flick said: "There were moments we had to persevere but we deserved the victory in the end. We played with a lot of intensity and created a lot of chances."

Hungary coach Marco Rossi said: "We are disappointed with the result but we can be proud of our performance. We had chances to score but we didn't take them.
